Comment: Dating based upon Farrington (2012), 140 note 347, based upon reference to the aspis of Argos and lack of reference of later 2nd century festivals, while giving allowance for a flutist's possibly long career. NB: the epigram has been dated by others to the Hellenistic period (SEG 26.954, SEG 19.549, SEG 39.444) and to the first century BCE (IG XII, 4 521). Bousquet (BCH 1994, no. 48) furthermore indicates that Ariston won at the ex Argous aspis, as there was no musical competition at the Olympia. This suggests he may have been a periodonikes. - PK/CT
